A New Perspective on Old Ideas in González de Salas’s Nueva idea de la tragedia antigua (2023)
Discover the transformative power of Jusepe Antonio González de Salas's Nueva idea de la tragedia antigua, published in 1633. This chapter explores Salas's manifesto on acting, where he champions the importance of a unified body-mind for actors to deliver an unforgettable performance. With a particular focus on women actors, this chapter also examines the impact of Salas's ideas on gender roles in theater through the lens of feminist philosopher Shannon Sullivan's notion of "transactionally co-constituted bodies." Through engaging in interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches and practical in-class activities, students can deepen their understanding of the complexities of early modern Spanish theater and explore the nuances of gendered bodying.
